What key skills are required to become a high-level strategy consultant?
To progress in highly qualified corporate strategy consulting missions, we believe several expert skills are indispensable. First, an excellent mastery of strategic analysis methodologies such as BCG matrices, McKinsey, or Porter’s models is required. A high-end strategy consultant must also be able to conduct thorough market studies in a rigorous and structured manner, with perfect mastery of sector analysis, segmentation, and competitive positioning techniques.
Solid knowledge of corporate finance, management control, and financial project evaluation is also paramount. The consultant must be able to model robust business plans, analyze investment profitability, and build credible business plans incorporating financial leverage effects.
Regarding implementation methodology, in-depth expertise in change management methods and transformation management is essential. Proven skills in steering complex transformation programs in multi-project mode are expected. Mastery of risk management approaches, benefits management, and transformation governance methods is also fully part of the requirements.
Finally, skills in communication, leadership, and management of multidisciplinary teams are required to mobilize all stakeholders around the defined strategy and ensure the success of the field deployment.
How can you position yourself after graduation to be recruited in strategy consulting?
Starting a career as a strategy consultant straight out of engineering or business school requires a very solid academic profile and significant experience. An excellent level in corporate strategy, finance, and marketing subjects is essential. Specialization or research experience in these areas is generally highly valued.
A strong attraction for solving complex problems, great intellectual curiosity, and formidable analytical skills are decisive criteria. Recruiters also appreciate profiles that have demonstrated real leadership abilities, multidisciplinary teamwork, and good stress management.
Finally, significant professional experience in consulting, auditing, or project management is often required, whether through internships, work-study programs, or contracts. This validates the operational skills essential in the field.
What are the career development opportunities for a strategy consultant?
After a few years of successful experience on high-stakes strategic missions, consultants can quickly progress to manager and then engagement director positions. This rank will allow them to supervise multidisciplinary project teams, steer the delivery of strategic outputs, and ensure the achievement of objectives set for client companies. Enhanced skills in large program management, expert team management, and business development with client companies will then be required.
Some seasoned consultants then choose to continue their careers by joining the ranks of associates and partners within the consulting firm. They then take on a strategic leadership role in developing new service offerings and new sector expertise to improve internal operations.
Other consultants take a different path by joining client companies as strategy directors or managers. With the cross-functional vision acquired in consulting, they leverage their ability to define and implement the strategic roadmap, solve complex problems, and optimize operations.
